Friday, October 8: End of whole group Explorer lessons for Quarter 1 (Grades 1-3)
Monday, October 15- end of Q 1: 1st-3rd grade "pull out lessons" 2x per week

"The Wake County Explorer program is an integral part of all elementary schools for third grade students. Program is to "provide an appropriately challenging educational program for students who perform, or show potential for performing, at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age, experience, or environment."
New to Conn's Jr. Explorer Program this year is the integration of Duke/Wake County's Nurturing for a Bright Tomorrow Program.
This program is designed to improve observation and description skills, help develop academic vocabulary and improve students' understanding of mathematics, social studies and science concepts . During our Jr. Explorer time slot, we will be focusing on Critical Thinking skills and four of Art Costa's 16 Habits of Mind. We will continue to build upon our divergent thinking skills, however, to nurture creativity.
Critical Thinking Skills covered: observing, describing, defining, sequencing, finding similarities and differences, analyzing
Divergent Thinking Skills covered: fluency, flexibility, originality, elaboration
Habits of Mind covered: Persisting, Managing Impulsivity,
First quarter Junior Explorer lessons will focus on Language Arts. We cover our featured critical and divergent thinking skills, and discuss "persistence" via Socratic seminars and Close Reading strategies on varied texts.
