10/22-10/26
The fourth graders just completed an in-depth author study of Robert Frost. The students analyzed and discussed many of his poems and made connections between his poetic themes and what they discovered about him as a person. To enhance what they are learning in their homeroom classes, the students also read and dissected a literary essay on Robert Frost. They understand terminology such as thesis statement, topic sentences, introductory and body paragraphs, and concluding paragraphs.
This week, we will transition from poetry to fiction with a fun novel study on Carl Hiasson's Hoot! The story prompts some great discussion about ethics, responsibility and looking at issues from multiple perspectives.

Math 9/21-9/25 |
Our fourth graders did a great job learning about the various types of graphs and their purposes. Over the next two weeks we will explore prime and composite numbers, factorization, interpreting multiplication equations as comparisons and solving problems with perimeter and area. During class, the students are working in teams to solve challenging math problems and focusing on "math talk" as they build their skills.
9/25: Look in your child's Friday folder for their completed challenge assignment related to perimeter, area and multi-step word problems. |

Our ELA students are rocking their poetry unit! I was super impressed by the variety of topics the class generated as a whole. We have worked on rhyme scheme and meter and have learned about poetic imagery and techniques such as personification, metaphor, simile, and alliteration. Look for students' work to be published on this site in the next week or so.
